Parallels, known for using virtualization to solve consumer problems, thought it had a surefire new use for its technology. Why not use the same approach it used to put Windows on a Mac to help ease the move from XP to Windows 7 . The solution was elegant, helping users both make the move and even run older programs that weren’t compatible with the new version of Windows.

McAfee apologizes for antivirus update disaster

It’s been a rough week for McAfee, but an even rougher one for many of its customers. Acknowledging the chaos it caused by pushing out a buggy antivirus update on Wednesday, McAfee apologized to its customers in the form of a late-night blog on Thursday . Barry McPherson, executive vice president of support and customer service, issued the apology on behalf of McAfee, saying the company was sorry for the headaches it caused for so many customers

You’ve had months now of teasers and gee-whiz video demos of new features and technologies that Adobe is planning to debut in Creative Suite 5 , and there’ll be boatloads of people telling you about them over the next 30 days before it ships ( here’s our summary of Photoshop’s new features ). But for some of us, the things that Adobe hasn’t fixed, and which don’t merit viral videos, remain sources of immense frustration.

Parallels unveils Windows 7 upgrade tool

Parallels is indeed coming out with a product that uses virtualization to help ease the transition to Windows 7. The software, the existence of which was first reported by CNET on Wednesday , takes one’s files and programs from a Windows XP or Vista PC and packages them up to be used on either a new PC or an existing one upgraded to Windows 7. If the programs are not compatible with Windows 7, Parallels uses its virtualization technology to allow the applications to run in the newer operating system
