Adobe moves mobile Flash from rhetoric to reality

After enduring months of scorn from Apple, Adobe Systems is set to begin a major effort to claim some of the mobile computing initiative for itself starting Monday night. That’s when the company plans to issue an all-but-finished beta of Flash Player 10.1, moving from demos and rhetoric to a more concrete answer to those who question the technology’s relevance. Flash for Android phones will become final with Google’s imminent release of Android 2.2, aka Froyo, and over coming months Flash 10.1 will spread to many other mobile operating systems.

Adobe Systems on Thursday released AIR 2, upgrading the features and aspirations for the software foundation. AIR is a programming foundation that lets a Net application run on a variety of computing platforms–Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, and, significantly, forthcoming Google Android mobile phones now as well. The software can run standalone programs written either with Adobe’s Flash technology or, courtesy of a built-in WebKit browser engine, with HTML and JavaScript, too.

(Credit: Adobe) Adobe Systems said it will issue a patch for a critical hole being exploited in the wild by delivering an update for Flash Player by Thursday, and for Adobe Reader and Acrobat by June 29. The update of Flash Player 10.x will support Windows, Macintosh, and Linux, while the date for the release of a Solaris version is still to be determined, Adobe said late Monday . Meanwhile, the Adobe Reader and Acrobat update to come in three weeks will support Windows, Mac, and Unix

Adobe reports ‘critical’ flaw in Flash, Acrobat

Adobe has issued a security advisory about a “critical” vulnerability in its Flash Player and Adobe Reader and Acrobat products that it says could let attackers take control of people’s computers. The company said late Friday that there had been reports of the hole actually being exploited and that an official patch was not yet available. Affected software includes: Adobe Flash Player 10.0.45.2, 9.0.262, and earlier 10.0.x and 9.0.x versions for Windows, Macintosh, Linux, and Solaris Adobe Reader and Acrobat 9.3.2 and earlier 9.x versions for Windows, Macintosh, and Unix The company said that the Flash Player 10.1 Release Candidate does not seem to be vulnerable and that Adobe Reader and Acrobat 8.x are confirmed not vulnerable
