It doesn’t take long for a computer to collect duplicate copies of all sorts of files. When my year-old laptop started running low on disk space, I knew one of the fastest ways to recover some lost hard-disk storage was to give the machine’s duplicate files the boot

(Credit: Box) Storage and collaboration service Box.net has an upcoming iPad app and was nice enough to give CNET an early demo. That is–we saw the same version that will be hitting the App Store but running on Apple’s iPad SDK simulator. The good news for fans of Box’s iPhone and iPod Touch app is that they’re getting what is arguably a more capable piece of software, with the same price tag as its smaller sibling: free

The last time I needed an exercise in frustration, I tried using the Finder to locate files that were taking up the most space on my disk. While the program is great for navigating the filesystem and locating items, when getting information on files or folders, or setting the Finder to automatically calculate file sizes, the “Calculating size…” process can sometimes pause for several minutes, and sometimes for tens of minutes
