The VideoLAN organization has released a new build of VLC Media Player for OS X. The version 1.1.0-rc of the player has been updated with numerous changes and fixes, including a major reworking of the VLCKit framework, CoreText-based text renderer for subtitles, and support for new codecs and enhanced features of current codecs.

Mozilla’s first stab at Firefox for Android is rough and unstable, but it’s a start. (Credit: Mozilla) Android users who relish being on the cutting bleeding edge of mobile software are going to love getting their peepers and fingers on Mozilla’s latest foray into Firefox for mobile phones. Late Tuesday, the open-source browsermaker released a prealpha version of Firefox for Android .

What a difference two weeks and a few words of legalese can make to the future of a widely used programming technology. In that span of time, Adobe Systems has gone from touting its technology for building Flash applications that run on the iPhone to canceling future development of that technology.

Google’s Chrome browser draws heavily on the WebKit browser engine project led chiefly by Apple, but now WebKit is adopting one Chrome idea: separation between some computing processes. Apple programmer Anders Carlsson announced the move, an interface called WebKit2, in a WebKit mailing list posting Thursday.

A bug in Thursday’s update to the development build of Google Chrome renders it incompatible with Gmail offline. Users who’ve had Gmail and Chrome configured for offline use will find that Chrome crashes as soon as you log in to Gmail.
