Just before the Black Hat security conference begins, Google has patched seven secuity holes in its stable version of Chrome and begun an effort to speed up the software industry’s response to such vulnerabilities. Google paid two $1,337 bounties for work that let Chrome avoid critical security problems by sidestepping vulnerabilities in Windows and the widely used glibc software library, according to a Monday blog post about Chrome 5.0.375.125 by Jason Kersey of Google’s Chrome team.

Internet Explorer's SmartScreen Filter (Credit: Microsoft ) Internet Explorer 8, with the help of its SmartScreen Filter , has “blocked 1 billion attempts to download malware,” Microsoft product manager James Pratt said in a blog post Friday.

Prizmo’s OCR scanner coming to the iPhone

Creaceed’s Prizmo software impressed us a few months ago with an update that added camera tethering support and perspective correction to captured images. But the cherry on top was its optical character recognition (OCR) processing, which would pull out text from whatever had been scanned. That same technology is on its way to a pocket-size version of the software, which should be available for the iPhone in just a few weeks (pending Apple’s approval)
